Analytical enquiry on the role of religion in education systems in Egypt and Tunisia. After looking into the social and political role of Islamists in these two countries, the article concludes that any new initiative in education reform that emphasizes education for citizenship would have to maintain religious education as part of the educational curricula, while trying to make the system more compatible with democratic values. The author highlights the Tunisian experience regarding Islamic education curriculum as a relevant experience to consider.
