Arab Institute for Human Rights


About the Institution: Founded in 1989 at the initiative of the Arab Organization for Human Rights, the Arab Lawyers Union, and the Tunisian League for Human Rights, the institute is an independent Arab non-governmental organization based in Tunisia with three sub-regional offices in Lebanon, Cairo, and Morocco. As part of its stated overall mission, Arab Institute for Human Rights aims to promote a culture of civil, political, economic, social and cultural human rights, as enshrined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and international conventions, and to strengthen the values of democracy and citizenship.

Life Skills-Related: The AIHR has been instrumental in implementing on the ground the principles and objectives of the World Programme for HRE by organizing periodic meetings among organization and formulating, for instance, tools that are contextual at national and regional level, such as indicators and impact measuring tools for human rights and human rights education. In 2014, the AIHR spearheaded the Marrakesh declaration that established twelve recommendations in support of an effective and sustainable environment for Human Rights Education and Democratic Citizenship.
